Life is full of irony. Irony, and circles.
The irony in realizing I’ve been paying for a custom domain name for the past 5 years. The fact that the last time I corresponded was a “see ya, wouldn’t want to be ya” letter to Iowa as I sprinted swiftly towards sunny California. What brings me back? Iowa. Specifically, an impending date with hundreds of miles of No Coast roads and an inevitable raw hide (yes, literally).
No, I’m not moving back. But I am returning for — circles. Two, in fact. I decided to do RABGRAI (the Register’s Annual Bike Ride Across Iowa) quite randomly after I turned 30. Do I love bike riding? I prefer it to running or driving a car. Do I loooove biking? My use of the phrase “bike riding” is likely a dead giveaway. Derrick counts tire rotations instead of sheep at night, I coax myself out on a ride with the reward of tasty electrolyte water. What possessed me? Naiveté and an obsession with goal-setting.
Technically, this is my first official training week. Although I started riding in January – mysterious knee/glute/hammy pain benched me for a number of months. Thankfully, a bike fit session (and many email exchanges following with said bike fit wizard) + investing in a cheap-o thermagun has seemed to keep the knee pain at bay. Despite the setbacks (assuming no more), the RAGBRAI blog training sheet shows I’m right on track. Phew.

I logged 20 miles this morning. Candidly, I’m not a morning person. But I’m about to become one.
This week’s training schedule
- Tuesday: 20 Miles – Done!
- Thursday: 20 Miles
- Saturday: 35 Miles
- Sunday: 20 Miles
